Do you lease or buy?

I'm kind of curious to know what percentage of Oppo is currently leasing a vehicle vs. having outright bought a vehicle.

So, how about it? Is your current vehicle leased or purchased?

(That is, if you're comfortable with sharing).

Wife's car is leased. Mine is owned outright (for about the price of two of her lease payments).

I've always bought outright. In fact, the Mini is the first car I've ever financed. Up until now I've always just paid cash.

Oppo seems mod/track friendly which are two things leasing doesn't seem to appreciate. I bought and my next will be bought because I plan to buy extra goodies for it.

I can't drive yet, so I don't have a vehicle. Both of my parents' current cars (2010 Lexus RX and 2014 Mazda3 sedan) are financed, although my dad has leased before.

I buy because leasing is a) a waste of money b) a bigger waste of money when I average well over 20,000 miles per year on my cars.

Also, %0 financing on my Golf R was free money.

I've only ever purchased 2 new cars (2005 Honda CR-V which was a piece of shit and I swore I'd never buy another new car) and a 2013 Subaru Outback (which is lovely except for the CVT) both were my wife's cars. The CR-V was replaced with an 04 Toyota Sienna XLE which felt like a rocketship compared to that POS CR-V. The Toyota was a bit of a lemon too so that got traded in on the Outback.

I've always had the "beaters" (in chronological order with some overlap) an 84 Pontiac Fiero (hit a deer at 70 MPH...RIP), a 67 Olds F-85 (330ci & Power Glide), a 89 Mazda 323, a 97 Subaru Legacy L, a 74 Dodge Dart Swinger, a 65 Dodge D-100, a 92 Lancia Delta Integrale HF, a 91 VW Polo, a 89 Toyota 4x4 Pickup, a 84 Toyota Land Cruiser and my current 00 Jeep Cherokee Classic. If I remember right, I've spent $38,500 on all my used cars and had some pretty damn cool ones. The only one of these I had to really dump any money into besides regular maintenance was (surprisingly) the Land Cruiser...

Some highlights...the 97 Legacy that I owned for 12 years...took from Colorado to Italy to Alaska where my friend still owns it up there. Just an FYI...if you drive 120mph for an extended period on the Autostrada you may need to replace a water pump and some oil pump seals from time to time. Also, the 89 Toyota 4x4 which I bought for $1500 and beat the ever-loving shit out of for 6 years straight and sold it for $1500 when I moved from CO back to PA. The Integrale was epic, but short-lived...I had to sell that before I killed myself. I bought it from some pilot with way too much money that had it pushing 400-ish HP and it was stripped out (no rear seat, stereo, etc)

All that being said...I was thinking once the Outback is paid off I may lease something luxurious (BMW 3 series) or hoontastic (STI, Focus RS)... I'll be at that midlife-crisis point soon... :-)

Bought outright, although that doesn't say much.

Kinja'd!!!

I just want to avoid any kind of debt. But that being said, our system doesn't reward you for building up debt and then paying it off, and rinse and repeat...

Even as I am between jobs right now, I don't owe anybody anything.

Next car will only be bought when I can pay for it with cash money.

I tend to keep cars for a long time so I have always bought. It's not that I think that leasing is a bad thing just that it doesn't fit me personally.

I'm with you on that. I like the idea of me making interest, not me paying interest. I'm mostly just curious to know what the average Jalop does. Given the price of so many new vehicles, I can only imagine that the majority of people are now leasing.

Buy new, pay-off, drive into ground. I'm nine years & 101k miles into that on my first new vehicle, my '06 Sierra crew cab. I intend to keep it until the frame breaks in half, then pull the motor, and stick it in something fun.
